Jim Richardson was born in Coco Beach, Florida. His family moved to San Diego, California and in 1955 began primary art classes with Loretta Metzger at her art studio in Spanish Village, San Diego, followed by advanced art classes in Los Angeles at the newly formed San Diego Institute which is still in operation.

After graduating from high school in 1965 from Southwestern College with a degree in art, Jim founded Far West Art Studio and opened art galleries in both San Francisco and Olde Del Mar, California.

In 1984 Far West Studio relocated to Prescott, Arizona to a larger art studio and steel workshop. With technical advances in metal fabrication such as applied computer-guided laser cutting on steel to create hand-formed, round statements and steel screens. Oil paintings are not on traditional, natural canvas and fine linen, but also on stainless steel, copper, brass & aluminum; patinas are infused in the steel.
